Jack Winbow
Status Alive. Barron's guardian in Kormor Kirak, lodging at the Bastion Inn; has fought the Necrotic Bulk, been recognised for what he is by Eppy, and is sharing tea with her. 'I don't love it here.' 'You will.'
Jack Winbow is an athletic war veteran in his thirties with unkempt hair, kind eyes, and parallel claw-mark scars down his back. Barron finds him working as a stable-hand at an Albion cavalry stable and hires him as guardian for the Kormor Kirak mission, noting that his 'affliction' may prove advantageous there. He fights with a Shamsir, throwing daggers, and a cane that unfolds into a six-foot Spetum. He goes hunting in the hills on full-moon nights, and Eppy Flinder knows what he is.

What the sources establishEstablished
- Jack is a war veteran in his thirties dressed as a stable-hand, athletic, with unkempt hair and kind eyes, who speaks to a Cavalry Count with easy confidence. pilot p. 11
- He stops the Count from striking his stallion, shoves him into the mud, and rides the burning obstacle course himself in a masterful display: 'Treat him right, and this beast will save your life.' pilot p. 12
- His back bears grave scars in parallel lines resembling the claw marks of an animal. pilot p. 13
- On the last full moon his room at Barron's was ready and waiting, but he was 'hunting in the hills' and caught 'nobody you know'; Barron calls this his affliction and says it may prove advantageous in Kormor Kirak. pilot p. 13
- His fighting kit is an elegantly curved Shamsir, a pouch of throwing daggers, and a three-foot hinged cane that unfolds into a six-foot Spetum with a central blade and side prongs. pilot p. 14
- He practises fighting forms on the blimp's observation deck to a four-four beat and tells Olivia that on a battlefield the routines go to hell: a scrum of hacking until 'a pile of barely grown kids' falls silent. pilot pp. 20-21
- He asks Olivia whether she dances, and how she celebrates joy. pilot p. 21
- He has not been to Kormor Kirak before, but met 'some of their local boys years ago' in an experience that left its mark; Barron asks if he will seek them out for a reunion. pilot p. 22
- He tells Olivia she could also try fear: 'If something you encounter scares the hell out of you, run.' pilot p. 23
- He catches Olivia when she faints at the vault, then follows Barron inside and asks why the door was still locked if Feeney was tortured for the combination. pilot p. 26
- He plays cards at the Bastion Inn with Rozito, Chulligan, Pidge, and Devorlen Koss, deals Olivia in, and dances with Eppy in a fast mix of clogging and square dancing. pilot pp. 29-33
- Nero sniffs the air near him and asks 'Have we met?'; Jack answers that he is new in town. pilot pp. 39-40
- Eppy tells him in the Hallaset Fields that he need not hide with her because she knows what he is; he says it is none of her business; she says 'Not yet.' pilot p. 45
- He fights the Necrotic Bulk with Eppy, covers the retreat, and cleans necrotic ichor from his blades afterward; Eppy pours tea for two and he pushes out a chair. pilot pp. 48-50, 53
- Book Two states he is a lycanthrope, a werewolf, recruited by Barron from the Battle Academy stables, who de-escalates first and fights with a berserker fury when that fails. Book Two, 'Character Profiles', Jack Winbow
Said, believed, or contradicted between sourcesRumored or disputed
- The pilot never names what Jack is; the word 'werewolf' appears in the pilot only among the monster paintings at the Bastion Inn, and Jack's own 'Woof' at the mention of evil spirits is a joke. Book Two, the grounding sheet, and the quest 'What the Clockwork Hears' state outright that he is a werewolf. pilot pp. 23, 28; Book Two; EC_GROUNDING_SHEET.md; quest_board_desk/quests/What_The_Clockwork_Hears.md
- Book Two says he speaks half a dozen languages and drinks too much; neither is shown in the pilot. Book Two, 'Character Profiles', Jack Winbow
- The City Locations Guide gives him cover quarters as senior attaché at the Albion Embassy with a concealed weapons cache in the tack room; the grounding sheet calls him a smuggler. City Locations Guide, 'Jack Winbow's Cover Quarters'; EC_GROUNDING_SHEET.md
- Eppy's 'Not yet' and Book Two's talk of 'multiple incarnations' imply a prior connection between them that the pilot does not explain. pilot p. 45; Book Two, 'NPC Relationship Map', Eppy
What no source settlesUnestablished
- Who or what gave Jack the claw scars, and whether the 'local boys' he met years ago were werewolves of Kormor Kirak, is not established in any source.
- Whether the furry-pawed creature that decapitates the Automatic Assassin on the Queen's Road rooftops is Jack, Szeret, or something else is not established in the pilot; Jack is inside the carriage at the time.
- How and when Jack was afflicted is not established in any source.

Notes. The extracted pilot text calls him Jack Winbow throughout; the name 'Jack Mackie' does not appear in any source read for this record. The series pitch on pilot p. 55 refers to him once as 'Finn' ('With Finn and Eppy, they must complete the theater'), which is treated as a draft-stage name for the same character.
