Barron Whitehallow
Status Alive at the final cut but under attack: Kiraline has appeared uninvited at his bedside in the Bastion Inn through a necromantic portal and gone full vampire to 'guarantee our trust is eternal'. Dying of a lung illness. Leading Albion's effort to rebuild the wedding theater.
Barron Whitehallow is Albion's Foreign Minister, a charming man in his sixties who has staked the empire's future on peace through a royal wedding. He is dying, coughing blood into handkerchiefs, and hiding it. Decades ago Kormor Kirak was his first diplomatic posting and Queen Kiraline was, in some fashion, his lover. He returns with an accountant and a bodyguard to investigate a murder in his own consulate, and the Queen wants him back.

What the sources establishEstablished
- Barron is Albion's Foreign Minister, in his sixties, who wears a blood-red lining, high-collared vest, and cape on his uniform and exudes political charm and kindness. pilot p. 4
- He has publicly staked the empire's future on the marriage of Albion's Prince to Terrassia's Princess, arguing that where hate and violence reduce numbers, love does the reverse. pilot pp. 3-4
- He is ill: he coughs blood into his handkerchief, calls it 'dying', and says the illness is worst near bedtime. pilot pp. 4, 9, 22, 34, 51
- He receives Feeney's coded pigeon message in Griffin Plaza, unlocks it with his signet ring, and has the messenger boy chew and swallow the tape. pilot p. 5
- He and Lord Wooster are old friends who greet each other by first name; Barron calls Wooster 'Benji' and trades a furtive look with him when Olivia reports an anomalous payment. pilot pp. 6-7
- He recruits Olivia Faren from the Counting House as his assistant, telling her she is bound for the furthest boundary of the empire, and recruits Jack Winbow from the cavalry stable as 'our guardian for this endeavor'. pilot pp. 8, 13
- He knows Jack's affliction: he had a room ready on the last full moon and says that in Kormor Kirak the affliction may prove advantageous. pilot p. 13
- After military service he joined the diplomatic corps, and Kormor City was his first posting, as General Counsel; his worldview then was as fixed as Olivia's. pilot p. 23
- He fought at the mounds at Barrow, where Terrassian asphyxiating gas was used; Koss, a Terrassian, apologises to him soldier to soldier. pilot p. 33
- He carries a gold medallion with a dragon's head, amber eyes, and blood-drop pupils, given on the Queen's promise that he could return to the castle unannounced. pilot p. 34
- Kiraline greets him with 'At last, you have returned to me', kisses him, tastes his blood, and offers him an eternal bond; he refuses: 'I will not be your slave', and she replies that they have played that game before. pilot pp. 36-37
- He identifies the marks on Feeney's body as portal magic and the runes as necromancy, and connects the attack to the Lich Cult, whose uprising was the only real threat to Kiraline's reign. pilot pp. 26, 29, 35
- Feeney's message told him that Feeney burned the theater because the Lich Cult meant to exploit it; Barron did not credit this until he saw the body. pilot p. 46
- He tells Olivia he was honest and wrong about there being nothing to fear, offers to send her home, and refuses to live by what-ifs. pilot p. 52
- The series document states that Kiraline turns Barron and that he becomes her unwitting agent, with Olivia later discovering this. pilot p. 55, 'Reign of Blood: The Series'
Said, believed, or contradicted between sourcesRumored or disputed
- Book Two, the Style & Tone Guide, and the grounding sheet make Barron the secret leader of the Lich Cult, planning to become a lich during a September 5 eclipse and possess the Albion boy king; the pilot's series document instead names Kiraline as the true enemy and Barron as her unwitting agent. Book Two, 'NPC Relationship Map' and 'Knowledge Cheat Sheet'; Style & Tone Guide, 'The War Economy as the True Villain'; pilot p. 55
- Book Two says Barron sent Olivia to Kormor Kirak as a useful distraction on a false financial trail; the pilot shows only that Wooster is glad to be rid of her. Book Two, 'NPC Relationship Map', Olivia
- Book Two's profile says old friends call Barron 'Benji'; in the pilot it is Barron who calls Wooster 'Benji', and Book Two's own Supporting Cast entry names Wooster 'Benji Wooster'. Book Two, 'Character Profiles', Barron; pilot p. 6
- Book Two says his cane is a sword cane from his Kormor Kirak days; the pilot shows him tapping the carriage roof with a cane but never draws a blade from it. Book Two, 'Character Profiles', Barron; pilot p. 25
- In-world broadsheets later report him near his end, unseen for a fortnight, with a young Albion gentleman signing papers on his behalf. courant_desk/issues/no04_the_eternal_reign.md; no05_the_marrow_is_cleared.md
What no source settlesUnestablished
- The nature of the illness that makes him cough blood is not established in the pilot; Book Two suggests scarred lungs from the gas at Barrow 'or perhaps something far more personal'.
- What exactly passed between Barron and Kiraline during his first posting, and what 'game' they played before, is not established in any source.
- Whether Barron survives Kiraline's attack in the final scene as a human, a thrall, or a vampire is not established in the pilot; the series document says only that he is 'turned'.

Notes. The pilot calls him Foreign Minister; the world guides, grounding sheet, and fiction call him Ambassador. The largest conflict in the canon concerns his villainy: the pilot's series document makes Kiraline the true enemy and Barron her turned, unwitting agent, while Book Two and later material make Barron the hidden architect of a lich conspiracy. The pilot wins here; the later reading is recorded under 'rumored'.
