The Cavalry Count
Status Alive, humiliated, and mud-soaked at an Albion cavalry stable; last seen deflated by Jack Winbow's steely gaze.
The Cavalry Count is a late-teens Albion aristocrat, rigid and chesty in his uniform, who orders the obstacle course set ablaze before he is ready, is thrown into the mud on the first jump, and tries to strike his horse. Jack Winbow catches his arm, shoves him back into the mud, and rides the course himself to show him how it is done. He is unnamed in every source.

What the sources establishEstablished
- The Cavalry Count is in his late teens, tall in the saddle of a war stallion dressed for battle, rigid and chesty in his uniform. pilot p. 11
- He orders Jack to stop dithering and set the obstacles ablaze, and rejects Jack's advice about first runs: 'Are you deaf? Light the damn fires!' pilot p. 11
- The course is gates, beams, and barrels set alight to simulate a battlefield, with mannequins holding wooden weapons and a horn and drum making a racket of distraction. pilot pp. 11-12
- His horse pulls up short at the first obstacle and pitches him into the mud. pilot p. 12
- He prepares to smack the horse on the nose, is grabbed mid-swing by Jack, calls him a 'rough-coated dog' and a 'cur', swings at him and misses, and readies his riding crop. pilot p. 12
- Jack shoves him backward into the mud and rides the stallion through the course; the Count watches, awestruck, and is deflated by Jack's warning that a mistreated horse will take his life. pilot p. 12
- Book Two treats him as comic relief and a representative of the entitled Albion ruling class, whose horsemanship is technically sound but morally bankrupt. Book Two, 'Supporting Cast', The Cavalry Count
Said, believed, or contradicted between sourcesRumored or disputed
- Book Two suggests he can be reformed through humiliation or retained as an obstacle, and that Jack's shove left him 'stunned not by violence but by the absence of it'. Book Two, 'Supporting Cast', The Cavalry Count
